SUMMARY:Super Nature
DESCRIPTION:Artists’ rich creative responses to the natural world and our place within it. \nHumans are indivisible from nature – we are dependent on its systems and rhythms\, and subject to its whims. Artists have long engaged with nature as a place where we seek solace and meaning. \nThis exhibition from the Art Gallery’s collection charts the adventure of human immersion in nature. Across four spaces\, it explores places where humans and nature interact and intertwine\, the role of gardens as memorials\, the wild nature that lives alongside (and sometimes within) us\, and the cultivation of nature for survival and sustenance. \nSuper Nature includes collection favourites\, such as teamLab’s computer-generated interactive animation Flowers and people – gold 2015\, where flowers gradually bud\, blossom\, grow and decay on digital screens; Grayson Perry’s monumental woodcut Animal spirit 2016\, which skewers the pretentions of modern commerce; and Kathy Temin’s My monument: black garden 2010–11\, a towering installation of organic forms in synthetic fur. \nSeveral new acquisitions will also be shown for the first time\, including Wendy Stavrianos’s Celebration of the palms\, Darwin 1976–78\, a major drawing made in response to the intense natural forces unleashed by Cyclone Tracy\, and four brilliantly coloured paintings by Butcher Cherel Janangoo that tell of the medicinal properties of bush foods\, their significance as markers of seasonal change\, and their cultural significance to Gooniyandi people.

SUMMARY:Mechelle Bounpraseuth ສູ້ສູ້ Sou Sou
DESCRIPTION:A playful\, heartfelt tribute to the foods that connect us to home and each other. \nEncounter towers of mangosteens\, big bowls of dragon fruits and giant stacks of canned food in this new interactive exhibition that bursts with colour\, memory and ritual. \nMechelle Bounpraseuth is known for her hand-built\, glossy ceramics depicting food and other homely treasures. In this exhibition of newly commissioned works\, large-scale ceramic sculptures honour the family dining table and the labour of preparing and sharing food. Fruit – especially the kind from her Lao parents’ homeland – is given sacred status as a currency of love. \nVisitors of all ages are invited to gather at tables or ສາດ saat (Lao floor mats) to share the flavours\, dishes and stories that are unique to them. Create an offering to leave on the steps of an elaborate fruit shrine or decorate your own label for a can of food to add to the shelves. \nDrawing on childhood memories and family rituals\, the exhibition places special emphasis on the role of young people in the continuation of culture. Its title\, ສູ້ສູ້ Sou Sou\, is a Lao phrase of encouragement meaning ‘you can do it!’ or ‘stay strong!’ When expressed to children\, it is often voiced with strength – a steady\, heartfelt push to keep going and not lose heart.

SUMMARY:Proximate Cosmologies
DESCRIPTION:Artists consider the mythical and controlling forces that organise time\, space and galaxies. \nProximate Cosmologies draws from the Art Gallery’s rich collection to consider the universe as undefinable\, where different ways of thinking reveal porous boundaries between the spiritual and material worlds. \nArtists have long imagined the universe as dynamic\, indeterminate\, and continually unfolding through the interplay of human and non-human forces. In Daniel Boyd’s A Darker Shade of Dark #1–4\, a flicker of light in darkness is not simply light – it is dark matter or an overlapping universe pressing against ours. Or take Shan Turner-Carroll’s Edge of the garden series\, where otherworldly travellers journey through perceived nothingness\, promoting magic and change. \nIndigenous understandings are at the centre of Proximate Cosmologies\, highlighting the interconnection between mysticism and origin stories. The exhibition includes collection favourites – such as Michael Riley’s seminal 2000 photographic series cloud and Adrián Villar Rojas’ The End of Imagination IV\, a complex layered composite form of salvaged and organic materials – and new acquisitions\, such as Susan Te Kahurangi King’s drawings that consider imaginary forces\, the unseen\, and the spaces between worlds.

SUMMARY:The Dapto Chaser
DESCRIPTION:The Dapto Chaser is a biting\, black comedy about chasing dreams\, racking up debts\, and the cut-throat world of greyhound racing. \nWhen your beloved dog’s your golden ticket and your family’s a ticking time bomb\, what could possibly go wrong? THE DAPTO CHASER is a biting\, black comedy about chasing dreams\, racking up debts\, and the cut-throat world of greyhound racing. \nWith the odds stacked against them\, the Sinclair family’s biggest gamble might not be on their champion\, Boy Named Sue — but on each other. \nMary Rachel Brown’s quintessentially Australian play dives into the brutal reality of addiction to the track\, where every win is a fleeting victory and every loss tastes like stale kibble. \nIt’s gritty\, it’s raw\, and it’s laugh-out-loud funny\, but at its heart\, it’s about the lengths we’ll go to for a chance at a better life.

SUMMARY:Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial 2026
DESCRIPTION:Explore the immediacy and intimate power of drawing. \nDrawing is an intimate art form. Nimble\, economical\, universal and immediate\, drawing can lay bare the bones of how we look\, think and feel. The Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial 2026 brings together 11 artists from across Australia who use a range of materials – pastel\, pencil\, watercolour\, ceramic\, light and thread – to channel drawing’s intimate potential. \nFor some artists\, drawing encourages attention to the minutiae of the everyday\, or close observation of the people and places that make up their worlds. Others draw to give shape to the elusive forms of their imaginations. For several artists in this exhibition\, drawing is about the elaboration of a personal visual language – the putting down of lines and marks that are all their own. Looking beyond the medium’s physical attributes\, this edition of the Biennial proposes that the closest thing to a definition of drawing is its capacity for intimate expression. \nThe exhibiting artists are Stephen Benwell (Vic)\, Tom Blake (WA)\, Andrew Browne (Vic)\, Emily Ferretti (Vic)\, Rosemary Lee (NSW)\, Mary MacDougall (Vic)\, Julian Martin (Vic)\, Jennifer Mills with Darcy Luker (Vic)\, Ryan Nazzari (WA)\, Louise Weaver (Vic)\, and Gutiŋarra Yunupiŋu (NT). \nSupported by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation\, this is the sixth Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

SUMMARY:Nolan Origins
DESCRIPTION:A major survey journeying through the landscapes and stories that transformed Australian art. \nExperience the astounding creativity and poetic power of Sidney Nolan’s art in this in-depth survey of the artist’s formative years in Australia. From indelible visions of the outlaw Ned Kelly to epic portrayals of Central Australia\, Nolan redefined perceptions of place and nation in Australia’s cultural imagination. \nIncluding his infamous series of paintings on bushranger Ned Kelly (1946–47)\, the exhibition brings together around 100 major works produced before Nolan relocated to the United Kingdom in 1953 – years in which he forged a reputation as one of this country’s most distinctive modernist artists. \nNolan: Origins examines the artist’s engagement with the places he painted as he evolved his singular\, enigmatic visual language\, including St Kilda\, Wimmera\, K’gari (also known as Fraser Island)\, Central Australia and the landscapes of Ned Kelly’s story in north-eastern Victoria. The exhibition also tells of how Nolan interrogated the idea of ‘Australia’\, invoking a sense of place through myths\, histories\, people and creatures imbued with his own personal inner meanings. \n

SUMMARY:Takashi Murakami
DESCRIPTION:Takashi Murakami is one of the most influential and recognisable contemporary artists of our time. Immerse yourself in a Murakami takeover of the Art Gallery’s Naala Badu building with a major retrospective in the Ainsworth Family Gallery and the global premiere of new work in the atmospheric Nelson Packer Tank. \nDeveloped by the Art Gallery in collaboration with Takashi Murakami\, this Sydney-exclusive exhibition reveals the evolution of Murakami’s signature ‘Superflat’ aesthetic – where art\, subculture and commercial imagery meld with diverse influences from anime to historical Japanese painting. Early works demonstrate his search for a visual language that could respond to a rapidly globalising Japan\, while later paintings and sculptures expand this inquiry into a vibrant universe populated by cartoon-like characters\, smiling flowers and feverish\, saturated scenes populated with legendary figures. \nSpanning 30 years and more than 150 works\, the exhibition traces his practice from the explosive innovations of the 1990s to a suite of new works currently being created in the artist’s studio. Bringing together paintings\, sculptures\, video and large-scale installations\, the exhibition charts the artist’s emergence as a defining figure of contemporary art and popular culture\, and reveals how Murakami bridges tradition and technology\, humour and critique\, the playful and the profound. \nA defining force in contemporary visual culture\, Murakami is often compared to Andy Warhol and is celebrated for high‑profile collaborations with cultural icons such as Issey Miyake\, Virgil Abloh\, Marc Jacobs\, Pharrell Williams\, BLACKPINK\, NewJeans and Billie Eilish\, as well as brands including Louis Vuitton\, Hublot and Dom Perignon.
